“Cap o’Rushes” for Storytime Magazine

Storytime Magazine issue 57 photo credit Storytime

Earlier this year I had the pleasure to illustrate a fairytale for Storytime Magazine.

A huge emotion and personal + professional goal for more than a reason: I’ve always wanted to work for Storytime, and they trusted me to illustrate an incredible story.
Cap o’Rushes tell a Cinderella like story but with a clever twist wich is awesome. Our heroine faces her adventure with kindness and perseverance, she is kind yet strong, a great model to refer to.

Cap o’Rushes

I fell for her immediately and started thinking how to draw her like a true princess without forgetting her cleverness, plus she was to be desguised under a cape made of shrubberies, which was artistically intriguing.
As I always do, everything started on my sketchbook, with some quick character sketch and ideas, plus a colour test to decide mood and palette.

Storytime is a wondeful magazine, it’s quality is superb (see flip-through video below), contents and design are amazing just like people working for it.

Thank you Storytime for trusting me, looking forward our next adventure!

International Firefighters day 2019

Saturday May 4th is the international Firefighters day!

We are all very grateful to this incredibly brave and generous men which guard and protect our lives everywhere, the fascination they exert on children around the world is more than earned!

I had the pleasure to work on a card game featuring 7 different French Firefighters patrols: it’s called the 7 Families Game where you have to reunite each family (Gran parents, Parents and Kids) who gather the most of them wins.

World Book Day 2019

March 7th, 2019 is World Book Day

What is World Book Day?

World Book Day is a registered charity on a mission to give every child and young person a book of their own. It’s also a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

This is the 22nd year there’s been a World Book Day, and on 7th March 2019, children of all ages will come together to appreciate reading. Very loudly and very happily. The main aim of World Book Day in the UK and Ireland is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. That’s why we will be sending schools (including those nurseries and secondary schools that have specially registered to participate), packs of Book Tokens and age-ranged World Book Day Resource Packs (age-ranged into Nursery/Pre-School, Primary and Secondary) full of ideas and activities, display material and more information about how to get involved in World Book Day.

But what is it to book lovers and bookworms around the world?

A day to celebrate our favorite stories, our love for books and how we share it with fellows or pass it on new generations.

As a parent, I will embrace the Share a Story call and will read to my kids, like every day but with a festive spirit, and be thankful for the many amazing adventures a book can share.

As illustrator I wanted to celebrate the day, grabbed the chance and doodled a little MAX from “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak, a kidlit classic and one of my favorite books to read – I love to roar my terrible roars, and gnash my terrible teeth and roll my terrible eyes and show my terrible claws (.cit from the book)

“And now,” cried Max, “let the wild rumpus start!”

Such a Christmas gift!
Recognition to one’s job is always a big balm to the soul: it sparkles joy, confidence and ignite you with wanting to do better and better.

Much of the information we presume to know about dinosaurs can be chalked up to theoretical speculation.  Of course, there are many factors about which we can be fairly certain; but there are so many other considerations which we may likely never know definitively.  For instance… what if dinosaurs were pink?

Author Jarrett Whitlow’s What if Dinosaurs Were Pink? addresses this question along with a plethora of other absurdly preposterous ponderings.  Written in rhyme and overflowing with witty conjecture, this children’s picture book is sure to incite lots of giggles and belly-laughs.  Replete with page after page of whimsical illustrations by Daniela Dogliani, this book is sure to be a big hit with children and their adult counterparts.  Recommended for home and school libraries, What if Dinosaurs Were Pink? has earned the Literary Classics Seal of Approval.

Literary Classics

I can’t tell how happy I am for this award and the many amazing reviews the book is getting and wanted to share a little joy!

written by Jarrett Whitlow and published by Warren Publishing is a beautiful quirky story stimulating kids imagination and inclusiveness!

I enjoyed working on the illustrations, depicting dinosaurs living real lives, imagine their colours and interactions and became so fond of my PinkDinos that I really much hope you’ll love and enjoy this book too.

In the author’s words:

What if Dinosaurs Were Pink? is the first in a series of engaging, rhyming stories that encourage young readers to stretch their imaginations beyond what we think we know about science, while respecting our great scientists who work hard to uncover more and more facts each day.  (…)

Whitlow was inspired by his daughter, Ella. “One day at the Orlando Science Center, my daughter and I were in the dinosaur section. Since she was old enough to express interest in colors, pink has always been her favorite, and now with two younger brothers, she often finds herself playing with dinosaurs. Looking around at all of the bones, I said to her, ‘What if dinosaurs were pink?’ She giggled and we both thought that would be a fun book.  Later that evening, the story was complete.”

“This book is both fun and educational. Any story that can get kids giggling while they learn is a winner,” added Mindy Kuhn, President of Warren Publishing. “This is one that parents will love too.”

It’s that time of the year!

Bologna Children’s Book Fair is just round the corner, it will be 10years since I visited for the first time and made my final decision to quit my AD in-house work to embrace freelancing.

I’ve been through up and downs of creative life but each and every day I’m so happy and grateful to work for kids literature and put my hand on service in the making of amazing, funny, quirky, touching, adventurous, educative stories.

Will be delighted to catch-up with fellow friends and clients, to absorb books magic, discover beauties and stock inspiration for the rest of the year.

Will keep an Instagram again his year, follow me or #BCBF2018 #BCBF

Let it Snow!

I’ve been waiting for snow all winter, waiting to build a snowman with my kids (they’d test my skills into reproducing Olaf, of course), waiting for a suggestive Christmas tucked under a thick layer of snow, like when I was a child.

My wait has been rewarded today! The arctic storm that took over Europe gifted your very illustrator with snow.

So here is a selection of snowy, wintery illustrations and a truly happy doodler!

You got to love fall

October is an amazing month in every doodler’s life!

It has a fair amount of sunny days, long enough light hours and the most amazing palette of the year!

On my early mornings errands I get to cross the city river twice and walk through both sides of Turin’s most beautiful park, Valentino. Each day, whether sunny or not, starts with soft chills (omens for Winter is Coming) and a light fog coming from the river, but by the time I sit at my desk the sun is warm and the air has that slightly golden hue. Also crossing a park means bumping into all shades of leaves and so walk through all shades from grey/blue to green/gold and red/purple.

Can you possibly be impervious to all this beauty?

To me September through November is that time of the year when I sit and make big plans, have ideas for stories to write os scribble, and generally I’m hungry to do things. I’m not sure if this frenzy has to do with any circadian/natural cycle, the kids going back to school or being October one of the most inspirational months for all creative people.

And then: HALLOWEEN!

I love Halloween and its ancient tradition, fancy costumes, spooky jokes and challenges to fears. Italian’s tradition for Ognissanti is slightly more creepy than the cheerful “Trick or Treat” thing, yet as a Children’s Illustrator I cannot be happier for a chance to draw little monsters and such.

Celebrate fall, October and Halloween with me!

Fan-art fan-love

I love to dwell into my favourite things (books, movies, series, comics…), like everyone, but being an over-imaginative big girl I tend to wander a little too much.
Frequently reading a book or watching a serie I get stuck into that world, crave for more, re-read and re-watch.

Recently I discovered the pleasure to do fan-art as a way to keep dwelling in those worlds and to try and give my interpretation of characters and stories behind them.
Also fan-art is helpful to test skills and tools as you can work on a ready-made brief and have loads of references.

Maybe you have those watercolour brushes you wanted to try, or draw for a more mature target for a change, or just exercise without the pressure to get an actual job. Which is refreshing, distracting and more often will surprise you by enabling paths and abilities you long forgot or didn’t know were even there.
Some will remain just exercises, other might end up like strong portfolio pieces.

Here are a few of my tries.

Please share your thoughts and suggest new inspirations.

Be my Guest

After 25 years (that much really?!) Beauty and the Beast hits theaters again, TODAY!

It is a live action movie which blends amazing computer graphics to real life actors, if you have seen any preview it’s going to be HUGE: there’s so much for your eyes to enjoy!
I hardly believe you escaped the massive promotion around the movie, but just in case… Beauty and the Beast official site is here.

Nevertheless, I won’t be ranting about how impressed I am about glimpses of the movie, nor how much I’m eager to be at theater and feast my eyes on it, nor how many times I have been singing as loud as I can “I WANT ADVENTURE IN THE GREAT WILD SOMEWHERE” since I was about twelve, etc. etc…

This post is about how much I love Beauty and the Beast – even the endless first novel from M.me Villeneuve. There’s something that truly tugs at my heart about it: maybe it’s Belle’s independence, kindness and loyalty, but mostly is the reforming Prince Adam from Disney’s version that fascinates me. Plus it feeds a bookworm’s heart to have a prince donating an entire library as love gift.

BBbibliotecaWEB

Loving so much the script (and the dreamy soundtrack) from the 1992 Disney’s movie and being an over-imaginative child at the time and an illustrator at present, you might well imagine how I enjoyed the frenzy around the new movie! The web is packed with wonderful illustrations, fan-art and whatever Beauty and the Beast might inspire and so is the kidlit market. You only have to type a few #s to loose eyes and time on them, I personally made a point not to search Beauty and the Beast on Pinterest. Ah!

BB-finaleWEB-WM

Could I spare the world of my contribute? Of course not!
And while I’ve been posting on socials my Beauty and the Beast doodles, I made up my mind to celebrate the movie with this post where you’ll find gathered my illustrations on the subject and this gif I made:

More doodles, WIP videos and pics, sketches and such can be found on my Facebook Page and Instagram.

I’m thinking to take my love and these early stage illustrations into a book project, so do stay tuned for news.

Happy 2017!
